A Mother's Love English Translation of Goethe's Poem

Who dares to say that the mother's love

Is less true than the love of the maiden?

The mother sacrifices herself for her child,

And all her being is consumed by her love.

She gives up her body and her soul,

Endures the pangs of birth and the sleepless nights,

Watches over the infant night and day,

And toils for it without rest or respite.

She comforts it when it is sick or tired,

And dries its tears with tender care;

She teaches it to walk and speak,

So let us honor the mother's love,
